Arrive in the capital.

Arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport, where a private transfer brings you to the Hampton Inn by Hilton, minutes away. The evening is easy: a welcome dinner with your guides and fellow hikers, the route laid out night by night, and a gear check so tomorrow starts clean.

If you land early, San José is worth an afternoon — the Central Market, the Jade Museum, a first coffee done properly.

Above the treeline.

The support van climbs the Pan-American Highway into the Macizo del Cerro de la Muerte, the high section of the Cordillera de Talamanca where the Camino Playa El Rey begins. In the afternoon you drop into the Dota Valley to Lauráceas Lodge — ten chalets in the cloud forest, a family kitchen with trout and apples from the valley, and, with luck, the resplendent quetzal feeding outside your window in the morning.

Over the ridge to Providencia.

Tonight is Armonía Ambiental, a family conservation project turned lodge: simple rooms, a wood-warmed kitchen, and hosts who have spent decades protecting this corner of the valley and will tell you how, over coffee they grew themselves.

The descent begins.

Out of Providencia the trail climbs to the high ridge one last time — and then the mountain opens. This is the long descent toward the Savegre, the same country our trail-running Queen Stage crosses at speed, taken today at a pace that lets you look. The trees give way exactly where they always do: at La Chaqueta, the first clearing in the mountain.

The clearing is tonight's home. A mountain lodge stands in it — beds under a tin roof, a kitchen that has fed travellers on this route for years, and a silence you can hear. Dinner is whatever the mountain gave that week, and it is exactly right.

The river is the trail.

Today the expedition meets the river properly. The trail works down into the Savegre canyon and crosses it twice — once on a hanging bridge, once on an andarivel, the hand-pulled cable strung bank to bank that mountain families here have used for generations. Between crossings: pools the colour of bottle glass, walls of primary forest, and the constant company of one of the cleanest rivers in Central America.

The day ends at the Refugio del Río Don Hernán, a family refuge on the riverbank. The village that stayed.

Downstream the forest thickens into mid-valley jungle, and the trail arrives at Quebrada Arroyo — a village that chose to stay. The mountain meets the sea.

The last walking day. The valley finally lets go: the trail leaves the jungle for the coastal plain, palms replace oaks, and the air turns to salt. Ahead is Playa El Rey — a wild stretch of Pacific sand between the mouths of the Naranjo and the Savegre, reached by no paved road, shared with almost no one. Nine days ago you were standing in the páramo; the same watershed delivers you to the tide line.

There is time to stand in it properly — photographs, a toast, bare feet. Salt water, then the capital.

A slow morning at Parador — the pools, the sloths in the almond trees, or an optional guided visit to Manuel Antonio National Park, three species of monkey included. After lunch the road back to San José, watching the country you just crossed on foot go by in reverse.

In the evening, the farewell dinner — a long table, the week retold, and the particular quiet of people who have walked from the páramo to the sea together.
